Adrenomedullin and adrenotensin regulate collagen synthesis and proliferation in pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells BJMBR
Li,W.; Kong,Q.Y.; Zhao,C.F.; Zhao,F.; Li,F.H.; Xia,W.; Wang,R.; Hu,Y.M.; Hua,M..
To understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation and extracellular-matrix accumulation in the development of pulmonary hypertension and remodeling, this study determined the effects of different doses of adrenomedullin (ADM) and adrenotensin (ADT) on PASMC proliferation and collagen synthesis. The objective was to investigate whether extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) signaling was involved in ADM- and ADT-stimulated proliferation of PASMCs in 4-week-old male Wistar rats (body weight: 100-150 g, n=10). The proliferation of PASMCs was examined by 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine incorporation. A cell growth curve was generated by the Cell Counting Kit-8 method. Expression of collagen I,...

Ischemia preconditioning is neuroprotective in a rat cerebral ischemic injury model through autophagy activation and apoptosis inhibition BJMBR
Xia,D.Y.; Li,W.; Qian,H.R.; Yao,S.; Liu,J.G.; Qi,X.K..
Sublethal ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is a powerful inducer of ischemic brain tolerance. However, its underlying mechanisms are still not well understood. In this study, we chose four different IPC paradigms, namely 5 min (5 min duration), 5×5 min (5 min duration, 2 episodes, 15-min interval), 5×5×5 min (5 min duration, 3 episodes, 15-min intervals), and 15 min (15 min duration), and demonstrated that three episodes of 5 min IPC activated autophagy to the greatest extent 24 h after IPC, as evidenced by Beclin expression and LC3-I/II conversion. Autophagic activation was mediated by the tuberous sclerosis type 1 (TSC1)-mTor signal pathway as IPC increased TSC1 but decreased mTor phosphorylation. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end...

SIMULTANEOUS RETRIEVAL OF AEROSOLS AND MARINE CONSTITUENTS IN COASTAL WATERS Gayana
Stamnes,K.; Eide,H.; Li,W.; Spurr,R.; Stamnes,J. J..
A new method for simultaneous retrieval of aerosol properties and marine constituents in turbid waters is described. This method is an extension to turbid waters of an approach developed previously for simultaneous retrieval of aerosol properties and chlorophyll concentrations in clear waters. This extension is accomplished by employing near-infrared (NIR) channels not available on the SeaWiFS and MERIS instruments to help retrieve aerosol parameters over turbid waters. Optimal estimation theory is used to retrieve in-water parameters from multi- and hyperspectral information. Both forward and inverse modeling strategies will be discussed, as well as the uniqueness of the solutions, the information content available in multi- and hyperspectral data, and...

Therapy of tacrolimus combined with corticosteroids in idiopathic membranous nephropathy BJMBR
Cui,W.; Lu,X.; Min,X.; Liu,M.; Guan,S.; Wang,Y.; Luo,M.; Li,W.; Li,Q.; Dong,W.; Miao,L.; Luo,P..
We evaluated the efficacy and safety of tacrolimus (TAC) combined with corticosteroids in treating patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). One hundred seventy-seven biopsy-proven IMN patients were recruited in this retrospective clinical study. Sixty patients received TAC (target blood concentration of 4–8 ng/mL) and 117 patients received daily cyclophosphamide (CYC, 100 mg) combined with prednisone. Remission rates at the end of the first, second and third month in the TAC group were significantly higher than that in the CYC group (1st: 35.0 vs 19.7%, P<0.05; 2nd: 56.7 vs 38.5%, P<0.05; 3rd: 76.7 vs 59.0%, P<0.05). In the first 3 months, daily urinary protein and serum albumin in the TAC group obtained a better improvement than...

Treatment of a subdural empyema complicated by intracerebral abscess due to Brucella infection BJMBR
Zhang,J.; Chen,Z.; Xie,L.; Zhao,C.; Zhao,H.; Fu,C.; Chen,G.; Hao,Z.; Wang,L.; Li,W..
A 55-year-old male presented with fever, stupor, aphasia, and left hemiparesis. A history of head trauma 3 months before was also reported. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed slight contrast enhancement of lesions under the right frontal skull plate and right frontal lobe. Because of deterioration in nutritional status and intracranial hypertension, the patient was prepared for burr hole surgery. A subdural empyema (SDE) recurred after simple drainage. After detection of Brucella species in SDE, craniotomy combined with antibiotic treatment was undertaken. The patient received antibiotic therapy for 6 months (two doses of 2 g ceftriaxone, two doses of 100 mg doxycycline, and 700 mg rifapentine for 6 months) that resulted in complete cure of the...
